More nights than road, and who that suits

A week off work, a car with children in it, passengers who would rather not spend a day of the stay looking at a highway. That is the shape this arithmetic describes, whether or not anyone involved would put it in those words.

It suits a traveler who wants the walking to start on the first afternoon. Louisville is 99.4 miles out and 1.92 hours. Serpent Mound is 76.4 miles and 1.72. Either one leaves most of the first day standing.

It also suits anyone who would rather not split a drive between two drivers. Hocking Hills carries five nights, and its 3.15 hours of road come out at 0.63, lighter than the 2.71 hours to Red River Gorge, which are reserved over four nights and come out at 0.68. Six tenths of a mile, and a different step

Columbus is 109.1 measured miles from Cincinnati and 2.24 hours. Indianapolis is 108.5 miles and 2.10 hours. The two roads are within six tenths of a mile of each other, and they sit on different steps of this list.

Columbus is reserved for three nights, which puts it at 0.75 and closes this step. Indianapolis is reserved for two, which puts it at 1.05 and opens the next one, where the road is a morning. The distance did not decide that. The nights did.

The same thing happens inside the step in smaller amounts. Serpent Mound has the shortest road here, 76.4 miles, yet it takes 1.72 hours, more than the 1.62 that the 82.7 miles to Lexington take. Prices run their own way as well: Serpent Mound opens the step from $495 per person, while Hocking Hills, further out and five nights long, starts from $950 per person.

Arithmetic that belongs on the page, not in the car

Hours divided by nights is a number most people work out on their own, usually on the way home, and usually once. Printing it in advance costs this office nothing, and it saves a reader the kind of discovery that arrives too late to act on.
